Malawi: HEALTH & GENDER JUSTICE COORDINATOR

PURPOSE

To support the design and implementation of community health and gender dimensions of holistic community programs in Southern Africa. Provide technical assistance, strategic direction, grant and proposal writing and coaching support to the ministry team and its partner organizations. Program areas include HIV and AIDS, Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), nutrition, WASH, community-based health care, and gender justice.

I.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Strengthen community health components of World Renew programs in Southern Africa by providing technical advice, coaching, and training to the staff of World Renew and its partner organizations such that programs will:

a. Align with accepted best practices in the field of global public health, as well as national health policy and strategies.

b. Utilize a Christian transformational educational approach

c. Be culturally sensitive while challenging communities to address unhealthy cultural practices within each context

d. Be economically sustained by local communities to the greatest degree possible

e. Strengthen the ability of local churches, World Renew partner organizations and local community development organizations to address current health issues.

f. Encourage good project management, proposal / grant writing, monitoring, evaluation and reporting to assure the best possible decision making by communities, churches, partner organizations, and World Renew

  1. Strengthen gender components of World Renew programs in Southern Africa by providing technical advice, training, resources, and guidance to the staff of World Renew and its partner organizations such that programs will:

a. Use best practices in gender analysis and gender-sensitive program approaches throughout the project cycle

b. Promote in-depth behavior change especially by addressing worldview, values, cultural practices, and gender specific roles in the region that affect gender justice and health-related issues

  1. Communicate with others, including:

a. Networking and building collaboration with other relevant government agencies, NGOs, private sector stakeholders in the community, and health related networks (SUN, SPRING, IMCIC) in order to streamline implementation, avoid duplication and learn from others.

b. Ensuring coordination of health and gender programming, proposal / grant writing in the region with World Renew’s Delta team

c. Serving as the principal regional health and gender program technical specialist for the region.

d. Actively participating in the World Renew health working group and the gender working group

e. Preparing briefing materials and reports on health sector development and gender issues for donors, Ministry Teams, and visitors where necessary.

f. In collaboration with field staff, evaluating and monitoring progress of gender and health components of programs, communicating results and issues.

  1. Mobilize resources: working in close collaboration with country teams and partner organizations, identify high value and high potential fundraising and mobilization opportunities for health programs. Ensure that new funding proposals comply with country strategies and policies, as well as donor requirements.

  2. Participate in Ministry Team meetings to help the team refine its strategy and policies

I.QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Mature Christian commitment and ability to work respectfully with various church denominations. Demonstrated ability to work within the cultural context in Southern Africa

  2. Legal right to work in Zambia or Malawi

  3. Proven ability to implement, improve and integrate sustainable community development programs through consultation, coaching and training.

  4. Expertise in community development and participatory practices that work to improve and strengthen community existing structures to foster behavior change.

  5. Management skills especially in planning, budgeting, financial management, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation

  6. Ability to link agricultural, nutrition, health livelihood, WASH and gender issues

  7. Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision and with a professional and self-motivated work style.

  8. Excellent verbal and written skills necessary for communicating well with cross-cultural stakeholders (donors, partners, staff, constituents, research institutions) and writing superb grant proposals

  9. Competency in the use of internet/email and can produce documents (including spreadsheets), PowerPoint presentations, high speed typing skills. Knowledge in statistical packages (e.g. SPSS, STATA) is an added advantage

  10. High standards of integrity, stewardship and accountability as confirmed by referees and past work experience.

  11. Flexibility and willingness to learn

II.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE1. Masters in community/public health (or a related field) preferred

  1. Minimum three years of cross-cultural work experience in community development or organizational consultation experience

  2. Experience with integrated community health programs

  3. Experience with training and advising people on gender mainstreaming

  4. Experience in behavior change communication strategies preferred

III. LANGUAGE SKILLS

☑ Excellent in written and spoken English and spoken Chichewa/Chinyanja.

IV. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

☑ Travel 30-50% of the time to rural project areas within Southern Africa

☑ Travel and accommodation in difficult rural areas with limited access to many services such as running water and electricity. Exposure to risks associated with travel in rural areas.

☑ Physically fit with the ability to lift 15 Kg or more
