PURPOSE:
The Global Safeguarding Director will play a pivotal role in the ongoing development of systems and processes to strengthen and embed a safeguarding culture across the organisation. This newly created role will form part of the Senior Leadership Team of World Renew, helping to ensure that all decisions are considered through a safeguarding lens. The Global Safeguarding Director will lead the work across all parts of the organisation to ensure the safeguarding suite of policies are implemented effectively, including ensuring that effective complaints handling processes are in place to protect the safety and wellbeing of staff, volunteers, our partners and the communities we serve.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communicates, collaborates and connects with internal and external stakeholders and networks (i.e. ACT Alliance, Canadian Food Grain Bank, Core Humanitarian Standard).
Develop and implement a safeguarding strategy that brings World Renew into full alignment with expected safeguarding norms, including the Core Humanitarian Standard.
Build and maintain a culture where safeguarding considerations are of highest priority.
Build the capacities of country safeguarding and complaints focal points to ensure that concerns at country level can be raised and people supported, and that safeguarding awareness at country level is prioritised. This will involve continuously developing the safeguarding focal points as a network, offering advice and guidance as required.
Strengthen organizational capacity to manage investigations into safeguarding violations, including developing a roster of investigators and building staff capacity through face to face and remote trainings and workshops.
Handle complaints received at the home office level (Grand Rapids and Burlington).
Respond to and where appropriate, investigate or coordinate the investigation of allegations of safeguarding violations directly, including maintaining comprehensive and confidential investigation case files, producing high quality investigation reports, and ensuring that World Renew meets its statutory and donor obligations to report safeguarding violations.
Uphold and promote World Renew’s commitment to ensuring the safeguarding and safety of the vulnerable communities we serve.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities. Matrix management of safeguarding and complaints focal points throughout the organisation will be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proven track record of implementing safeguarding policy and practices and developing a safe and trusted culture in an international organization.
Ability to work strategically and practically across varied teams
Detailed knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and best practice in safeguarding that apply to international organizations.
Significant experience in conducting and coordinating safeguarding investigations.
Experience designing and delivering capacity building initiatives to a diverse and international audience, including in safeguarding investigations and case management.
Experience designing and delivering safeguarding awareness training in different settings for varied audiences, with the ability to adapt complex information according to the audience.
Strong facilitation and presentation skills
Clear communication and public speaking skills, capable of delivering messages appropriately to a variety of audiences, building a sense of passion and engagement.
Must be capable of working both individually and as part of varied team.
Ability to deliver results against demanding timetables and in the face of competing priorities, you will be comfortable working in challenging international environments.
Excellent relationship management skills and ability to communicate in all forms (written, verbal, negotiation, presentation skills, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
A master’s degree, in international development, political science, law, or related specialty
At least ten years of relevant experience in the international humanitarian and/or development sector
At least 3 years of leadership experience within an international NGO, a complex NGO, a ministry or other similar organization working with vulnerable communities and populations.
Membership in a Christian church and agreement with the doctrine of the CRC signified by signing a covenant statement
Experience managing and conducting investigations into serious complaints.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Fluent in English with effective written and verbal communication skills is required.
Good working knowledge of Spanish or French is an asset.
