Malawi: Gender Justice & Economic Empowerment Coordinator (Regional Tier, Malawi Nationals/Residents Only)

Position Purpose

To support the gender justice and economic empowerment dimensions of World Renew supported programs in Southern Africa (Malawi, Zambia & Mozambique) by providing technical assistance, resources, guidance, training, and support to World Renew staff and local partner organizations.

II.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strengthen economic empowerment and livelihoods components of World Renew programs such that programs will:

a. Utilize a Christian transformational educational approach

b. Align with globally accepted livelihoods and economic empowerment best practices, as well as national policies and strategies

c. Be culturally sensitive while challenging communities to address unhealthy cultural practices

d. Be economically sustained by local communities to the greatest degree possible

e. Strengthen the ability of local churches, partner organizations and local community organizations to address current livelihood challenges and opportunities in the region. f. Encourage good situational analysis, needs assessment, project management, proposal / grant writing, monitoring, evaluation and reporting to assure the best possible decision making by communities, churches, partner organizations, and World Renew

2. Strengthen the gender justice components of World Renew programs such that programs will:

a. Use best practices in gender analysis and gender-sensitive program approaches throughout the project cycle

b. Promote in-depth behavior change especially by addressing worldview, values, cultural practices, and gender specific roles that affect gender justice and health-related issues

c. Assist partner staff to learn how to use tools to facilitate conversations around gender justice.

3. Improve communication with others, including:

a. Networking and building collaboration with other relevant government agencies, non-government organizations, private sector stakeholders in the community, World Renew Teams and working groups, and livelihoods related networks (SEEP, Chalmers Centre etc.) in order to streamline implementation, avoid duplication, and learn from others.

b. Ensuring coordination of the gender and livelihoods plans, programming, and proposal writing in the region with World Renew’s Program Excellence team

c. In collaboration with field staff, evaluating and monitoring progress of gender and livelihoods components of programs, then preparing briefing materials and reports to communicate results and issues to donors, Ministry Teams, and visitors where necessary.

4. Mobilize resources: working in close collaboration with country teams and partner organizations, identify high value fundraising opportunities for livelihoods and/or gender programming. Ensure that new proposals comply with country strategies and policies, as well as donor requirements.

III.QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Mature Christian commitment and ability to work respectfully with various church denominations within the cultural context of Southern Africa

  2. Legal right to work in Malawi

  3. Bachelor’s degree in community development (or a related field), Master’s degree is preferred

  4. Significant experience in supporting/implementing livelihoods interventions including VSLA and Self Help Group approaches, private sector linkages, value chain analysis, market systems analysis, access to market strategies. Experience in mainstreaming the economic empowerment of Women and Girls into programming will be an advantage.

  5. Proven ability to integrate gender mainstreaming approaches in agricultural, nutrition, health, livelihoods, and WASH programming. Experience in behavior change communication is preferred.

  6. Demonstrated experience in consultation, coaching and participatory training to improve integrated sustainable community development programs which strengthen community structures.

  7. Management skills especially in planning, budgeting, financial management, analyzing data, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation. Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision and with a professional and self-motivated work style.

  8. Excellent verbal and written skills necessary for communicating well with cross-cultural stakeholders (donors, partners, staff, constituents, institutions) and writing superb grant proposals.

  9. Competency in the use of internet/email and ability to produce professional documents including spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. High-speed typing skills.

  10. High standards of integrity, stewardship and accountability

  11. Flexibility and willingness to learn

  12. Excellent written and spoken English and spoken Chichewa/Chinyanja required; ability to converse in Portuguese a definite advantage.

IV. Physical Demands

☑ Willing to travel 25-50% of the time to rural areas within Southern Africa with limited access to running water, Internet, and electricity. Exposure to risks associated with travel in rural areas.

☑ Able to lift and carry 15 Kg or more for short distances
